Senior IAS officer of Jharkhand Vinay Kumar Choubey has been arrested by the Anti -Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday in connection with an alleged liquor scam. Also, Joint Product Commissioner Gajendra Singh has also been arrested. This action has been taken after questioning by ACB.
Choubey, an IAS officer of 1999 batch, has been the Excise Secretary of Jharkhand and Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Hemant Soren. He was questioned at the ACB headquarters in Ranchi and then arrested. This action has been taken under the investigation of a large liquor scam related to Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.
What is the matter?
According to ACB, the scam is related to manipulation in the 2022 Jharkhand Excise Policy, due to which the state suffered heavy revenue loss. It is alleged that Choubey and Excise Joint Commissioner Gajendra Singh, along with an organized gang, made changes in the policy, promoting fake holograms and illegal liquor sales. The gang was also active in Chhattisgarh, which includes retired IAS Anil Tuteja and businessman Anwar Dhebar. Chhattisgarh ACB and Economic Offenses Branch (EOW) lodged an FIR in this case on 7 September 2024, on the basis of which Jharkhand ACB also lodged an FIR after preliminary inquiry (PE).
At 11 am on Tuesday morning, Chaubey was detained from his residence in Ranchi. According to sources, ACB made intensive inquiries to gather information about their role and others involved in the scam.
