Devjit Saikia on Saturday filed his nomination for the post of Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) while Prabhtej Bhatia applied for the post of Treasurer. These two officers are the only candidates to file nomination for their roles and hence their selection is considered certain.
Prabhtej Bhatia of Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association has applied for the post of treasurer. This post had become vacant due to the departure of Ashish Shelar. Shelar had recently taken oath as a cabinet minister in the Maharashtra government.
Devjit Saikia, on the other hand, has been working as the interim secretary of BCCI since Jay Shah became the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1. BCCI President Roger Boney named Saikia as interim secretary after Jay Shah stepped down.
According to the election schedule on the board’s website, nomination applications could be filed till 4 pm on Saturday and only Saikia and Bhatia have filed their nominations.
After Jay Shah became the ICC President, BCCI President Roger Binny used his constitutional powers to appoint Saikia as the acting Secretary of the BCCI. Saikia’s appointment is a temporary solution for the BCCI until the formal elections are held to appoint the permanent secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Saikia was working as Joint Secretary of BCCI.
