New Delhi:
According to the report on Sunday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has convinced Team India captain Rohit Sharma to step down from the captaincy after the Champions Trophy 2025. Recently, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar had discussed this topic in detail with Rohit and informed him about the further plans of the board. On this Rohit said that he wants to captain till the Champions Trophy. However, after this report came out, the discussion started more on who should be the next captain than on Rohit leaving the captaincy. Let us explain one by one what are the two major requirements to become a captain and who is at the forefront in the race.
3. KL Rahul
After playing some good innings in the Test series in Australia, a section of people are seeing the future captain in KL Rahul. He has once taken Lucknow Super Giants to the finals of IPL under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir. And his rapport with Gambhir is also good. KL Rahul is one of those few players whose place is almost certain in all three formats of the game. This is what makes him a strong contender, but he is at number three.
2. Jasprit Bumrah
Current captain Jasprit Bumrah is discussed the most. Rohit has recommended his name to BCCI. Everyone saw that he also won the Test under his captaincy in Perth, Australia. Bumrah has a good grip on the players. He is intellectual and takes all the players along, but with Bumrah getting injured at regular intervals and taking frequent breaks due to workload, his claim seems to be dying down. BCCI officials have become helpless in front of this aspect.
1. Rishabh Pant
The Indian wicket-keeper batsman is the most suitable player for the post of captain as per BCCI criteria. He is 27 years old and already has a lot of experience in captaining Delhi Capitals. No team of Team India can be imagined without Rishabh Pant. And this is what makes him the strongest contender to become the next captain after Rohit.
Necessary condition to become captain
The essential condition for becoming the captain of Team India is that he should have a confirmed place in all three formats. This was the reason when Virat Kohli had to lose his captaincy because he wanted to leave the T20 captaincy and Ganguly had said that you should continue captaining. However, later this policy was broken by making Suryakumar Yadav the T20 captain, but despite this, the first demand remains that the place of a particular player should be confirmed in all three formats because the captain of ODI and Test will be the same person.
