SN Subrahmanyam, chairman of Larsen and Toubro, is once again in the headlines. This time, while referring to government schemes, he said something that the discussion got hot. In fact, in Chennai on Tuesday, he said that due to welfare schemes, construction labor has started to avoid working. At the CII South Global Liberation Summit, he has expressed concern over the shortage of construction industry laborers.
SN Subrahmanyam spoke about construction workers
He said that nowadays for construction work, laborers are not ready to migrate because they do not want to go away from their homes. He said that he is not ready to go anywhere due to the direct benefits due to different welfare schemes like MNREGA or Jan Dhan etc. He said that the laborer is not ready to flee when he gets a chance here. He may be happy with his earnings or maybe he is not ready to go out somewhere due to different welfare schemes.
It will have an impact on the construction of India
He said that lack of workers will affect the construction of India’s infrastructure. SN Subrahmanyam also said that India is facing a peculiar problem of migration, where L&T needs 4 lakh employees but has to recruit 16 lakh people. He also emphasized the need to amend salary for workers as per the inflation. He said that the number of workers in the Middle East is 3.5 times more than India.
L&T Chief came into controversy with his statement last month too
L&T’s Cherianman said that last month he wanted his employees to work on Sunday. He had said, “What do you do by sitting at home? How long can you see your wife? Let’s come to the office and work.”
Many industrialists talked about the need for work life balance
In this debate, many industrialists like Adar Poonawala, Anand Mahindra and Sanjeev Puri of ITC talked about the need for work life balance. The matter reached Parliament when the government told Parliament last week that it was not considering any proposal to increase maximum work to 70 or 90 hours per week.
