Former India wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik said on Friday that the IPL has increased the level of Indian cricket so much that now India can launch two to three national teams of the same level at the same time. In a conversation with Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket director Mo Bobat and former England cricketer Isha Guha, Karthik appreciated the role of IPL in changing the mindset of Indian cricket and strengthening the infrastructure.
Dinesh Karthik said, “The IPL has filled the mentality of victory among all our players. Money and economic benefits have also strengthened the infrastructure and when the structure is strong, the level of the game is better.” He said, “We can say that since the arrival of IPL, India can now take two to three teams in international cricket at the same time. India has a storehouse of talented cricketers.”
Karthik, who has been a part of the IPL since the beginning, also shared how the league has influenced the Indian players. Recalling his experience of sharing the dressing room with the great Australian fast bowler Glenn McGra, in the early times of the tournament, he said, “For me, the way Australia played at that time was a big shock. He felt as if he felt as if there is a herd of wolves to conquer every game.”
The IPL not only gave Karthik a chance to shoulder to shoulder with some best players in the world, but also helped them develop confidence to compete at the highest level. He said, “In my first year, I got a chance to spend time with Glenn McGrag and practice him. I got to know him better and became comfortable, which helped the confidence and mentality to compete with the best.”
