Dhaka:
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday asked the interim government chief Mohammad Yunus to hold national elections by December 2025 and reorganize his cabinet by removing “controversial advisors”. Khandekar Musharraf Hussain, a member of the BNP’s highest policy setting committee, said after meeting the Chief Advisor Yunus on Saturday evening at his official Jamuna residence, “We have called for a quick completion of reforms and holding a national election by December.”
Hussain, who led the BNP delegation, said that he has also asked Yunus to announce a roadmap for holding elections and has also demanded the formation of a advisory council by removing “controversial advisors”.
Demand to remove these advisors
Two of the three advisors were included in the Interim Advisory Council as representatives of the Students Against Discrimination, which led the agitation to remove the Awami League government last year. He has been given the charge of Youth and Sports and Information Ministry respectively, while the third advisor is former diplomat Khalilur Rahman, who is also the National Security Advisor of Younus. Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, who attended the meeting as part of the delegation, said that the party had earlier demanded the removal of him in a written statement.
Asked whether BNP is satisfied with the meeting, Ahmed said that the delegation has presented his views and will wait for Younus’s response and “only then we can say whether we are satisfied or not”.
Government is working on three agendas: Hussain
Hussain said that the government is working on three agenda – reform, lawsuit of the leaders of the rule of the rule of Hasina and the election. BNP is demanding the removal of Alam and Bhuiyan as it is in a dispute with the newly formed student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) with SAD leaders supported by Yunus. Yunus also met Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP leaders.
Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman said, “We (for elections) have proposed two potential time limits either if all reforms are made in mid-February 2026 or immediately after Ramadan, if the reforms take a little longer.” He also said that the Jamaat delegation told the interim administration that he should declare two clear and specific roadmaps for one improvement and the other for election.
NCP is pressurizing local government election
On the other hand, the NCP pressurized for the local government’s elections before the national election, reiterating its first expressed desire, which BNP strongly opposed, which emerged as the most prominent political party with the expulsion of the previous government and then the disintegration of the Awami League.
Yunus’s office later stated that his leadership had gained confidence of all three major political parties and expressed his support for independent, fair and peaceful elections under his administration.
Elections will be held between December and June: Shafiqul Alam
Yunus’s press secretary Shafiqul Alam said that the Chief Advisor told all the parties that the national elections would be held at some time between December and June, while both Jamaat and NCP supported the deadline.
The meeting was held a few hours after the advisory council or cabinet issued a statement, which confirmed that Younus interim government would remain prominent.
