Big accident in Surat, 4 workers died due to fire in steel plant

A major accident has occurred in Surat, Gujarat. According to reports, four workers died and another was injured in a fire that broke out at a steel plant in Hazira Industrial Area on Tuesday evening. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot said that this incident took place at the plant of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), in which 4 workers died.

He said, “We have learned that the burning coal in a part of the plant suddenly spread, due to which the fire spread. The fire resulted in the death of four workers, who were on the lift in the plant at that time.” Further investigation will be done by the police and factory inspector.

An official of Hazira police station said that no report of accidental death has been registered yet. An official said that the bodies of three of the four people who died have been brought to the civil hospital for post-mortem. A company spokesperson said in a statement that the incident occurred due to equipment failure at the Corex plant.

“We regret to report the accident that occurred at the Corex plant due to equipment failure at AMNS Hazira operations. The accident occurred around 6 pm today when the unit was restarted after a shutdown,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Four contract employees of a private company doing maintenance work on a nearby elevator were trapped in the impact and could not escape.”

It said that one worker suffered minor injuries and was immediately admitted to a hospital located on the plant premises, where his condition is improving.

The statement said, “We are providing all possible assistance to the families of the affected personnel. All emergency protocols have been immediately activated and the area has been cordoned off. We are working closely with the relevant authorities and “An internal investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the accident.”
