The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the construction of a 6-lane Greenfield High-speed National Highway from JNPA Port (Pagote) to Chowk (29.219 km) in Maharashtra. This project will be developed in build, operate and transfer (BOT) mode, which will cost Rs 4,500.62 crore.
The official statement stated that the need to increase the volume of the container in JNPA port and the development of the Navi Mumbai International Airport, the need to increase national highway connectivity in the region was identified.
Currently, due to huge congestion in urban areas like Palaspe Phata, D-Point, Kalamboli Junction, Panvel, it takes 2-3 hours to move vehicles to NH-48 and Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s golden quadrilateral (GQ) section of Mumbai-Pune Expressway, there is about 1.8 lakh PCU traffic per day. After the Navi Mumbai airport is commissioned in 2025, the need for direct connectivity is expected to increase even more.
The statement said that this project has been designed to meet the connectivity requirements of the region and improve connectivity for JNPA Port and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
The National Highway starts from JNPA Port (NH 348) (Pagote village) and ends at the Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH-48). It also connects the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Goa National Highway (NH-66).
The two tunnels passing through Sahyadri in the new National Highway will make the movement of commercial vehicles easier in the hilly areas, which will ensure fast movement for large container trucks.
The new 6-lane green field project corridor will improve connectivity with JNPA port, which will help in safer and efficient freight. This project will also open new avenues of development and prosperity in developing areas around Mumbai and Pune.
