CBI has registered a new case against Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and others. In the year 2018, CBI had started preliminary investigation against Karthi Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited (ASPL), his associate S Bhaskararaman and other unknown persons. This investigation was being conducted in a case related to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

The investigation found that Diageo Scotland and Sequoia Capitals had transferred money to ASPL in a suspicious manner. This is the same company which was under the investigation of CBI and ED in the INX Media case and another case of getting Indian visas to Chinese employees.

Diageo Scotland and controversy

Diageo Scotland, which imported Johnnie Walker whiskey into India, was embroiled in a controversy in 2005. ITDC had banned Diageo from selling duty free products, due to which the company suffered huge losses.

CBI alleges that Diageo Scotland contacted Karti Chidambaram to get this ban lifted and in return gave a bribe of US $ 15,000 to Advantage Strategic Private Limited (ASPL). The CBI has claimed that this bribe was given in the form of a fake contract between Diageo Scotland and ASPL.

Karti Chidambaram was arrested by CBI in 2018 in the INX Media case. His father and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram was also later arrested by the CBI and ED. CBI says that investigation is going on in the new case.
