He comes from a famous and prosperous film family. His mother was the only sister of Satidevi Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar and Kishore Kumar. Apart from this, his siblings included actor Ta Joy Mukherjee and filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, who married Bollywood actress Tanuja. Actress Kajol and Rani Mukherjee are her niece.

Deb Mukherjee’s career started in the 1960s with some small roles in films like “Tu Hi Meri Zindagi” and “Actress”. She later played supporting roles in films “Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander” and “King Uncle”. Deb Mukherjee was last seen in Vishal Bhardwaj’s 2009 drama “Kaminey”, in which Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra played the lead role.
