These days China is on social media. The pictures of hospitals going viral are very scary. There is a stream of patients everywhere. It is being claimed that people in China are falling prey to Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and many other dangerous viruses. The viruses by which most people are falling ill include viruses like Influenza A and Mycoplasma.
What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMVP)?
HMVP is a virus that usually causes cold-like symptoms. This virus is having the biggest impact on small children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems. And because of this, these people are becoming seriously ill. Due to exposure to this virus, patients are facing problems like cough, fever, blocked nose etc. Due to this virus, patients also suffer from serious diseases like pneumonia and bronchiolitis.
The virus is spreading rapidly like Covid
It is being said about this virus that the speed of its spread is similar to that of Covid. It is being said to be infected like Covid-19. This virus spreads through coughing or sneezing of an infected person. It is being said that there is a risk of infection by touching surfaces infected with the virus.
Who is most at risk?
Regarding this virus, it is being said that due to this, children, elderly and people with weak immune system are at higher risk of complications from HMPV infection. This virus spreads through close contact with an infected person or by touching contaminated surfaces. It usually causes cold-like symptoms which usually resolve on their own within 2-5 days.
What diseases can it promote?
HMVP can cause both upper and lower respiratory diseases in all age groups. However, it is especially prevalent in young children and the elderly. However, having a history of lung disease such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or emphysema does not increase the chance of getting HMPV. But once infected, these conditions can worsen the severity of symptoms. The same applies to individuals with weakened immune systems such as those undergoing chemotherapy or recovering from organ transplants.
WHO has not confirmed
Even though there is a lot of discussion on social media about this virus spreading in China, WHO has not said anything about it yet. WHO has not even confirmed the existence of any such virus in China.
