Born in Punjabi family
Born on 6 September 1929 in a Punjabi family of Lahore, Yash Johar is not interested in any introduction. Direct and producer Karan Johar’s father Yash Johar established himself in Bollywood through his films. His specialty was a grand set in his films, a magnificent location of abroad and a mixture of Indian traditions. Yash Johar started his career as a photographer in the 1950s. He got a break from the 1951 film Badal. He then worked as a production executive in the film Love in Shimla (1960) for Shashadhar Mukherjee’s production company Filmistan. He later joined Sunil Dutt’s production house Ajanta Arts. He associated with Dev Anand’s Navketan Films. He took production of films like “Jewel Thef”, “Prem Pujari” and “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”.
Foundation of Dharma Production laid in 1976
It was from here that his luck turned and in the year 1976, Yash Johar laid the foundation of Dharma Production. He made the first film ‘Dostana’ in Dharma Production. Written by actors Amitabh Bachchan and Salim-Javed, the film got a lot of love from the audience at the box office and this film proved to be a super hit. This was followed by films like Dharma (1984), Agneepath (1990), Gumrah (1993) and Duplicate (1998) under the banner of Dharma Production. Although he also faced economic loss, but during this difficult days his son Karan Johar took command of the company and his production made a film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’.
The film was directed by his son Karan Johar. Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan starrer film got the love of the audience and the film became one of the biggest hit films earning in the domestic and foreign markets. After this, he made films like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, ‘Stir Dil Hai Hindustani’ and ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’. Kal Ho Na Ho was Yash Johar’s last film. He married filmmaker BR Chopra and Yash Chopra’s sister Heeru Johar. Almost every person in the film industry was convinced of the nature of Yash Johar. He died in Mumbai on 26 June 2004.
