The United Nations has warned that the melting of glaciers threatens food and water supply of 2 billion people worldwide. It has been said that the current rate of glacier melting is “unprecedented” and will have unexpected results. United Nations agency UNESCO has said in its report that two-thirds of the world’s irrigated agriculture is likely to be affected in some way due to the decrease in glaciers due to the climate crisis and declining snowfall in the mountainous regions.

This report of UNESCO is named World Water Development Report 2025 (World Water Development Report 2025). According to the report, more than 1 billion people live in the mountainous regions and half of them in developing countries are already experiencing food insecurity. This condition is likely to deteriorate, as food production in such areas is dependent on mountainous water, melting ice and glaciers.

Developed countries are also in danger. UNESCO Director General Audrey Ajole said: “Whether we live anywhere, we are all dependent on mountains and glaciers. But these natural water tower (mountains) are facing imminent threat. This report reflects the immediate need for action.”

According to The Guardian report, the director of Hydrology in UNESCO Abu Amani said that the fall of the glaciers has had another effect, according to him the layer of ice is reflected, that is, it reflects the rays of the sun. Due to the back of the ice, it replaces the surface and replaces it which absorbs heat. He warned, “The melting of the glaciers affects the reflection capacity of (solar) radiation and it will affect the entire climate system.”
