Government committed to 100 percent electrification of Indian Railways, the use of renewable energy will increase: Ashwini Vaishnav

The Government of India is committed to achieving ‘Net Zero’ emissions for the Railways and the electrification of the railway will reach 100 percent in FY 2025-26. Union Railway, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav made this statement. Addressing the ‘Global Investors Summit 2025’ of Madhya Pradesh through a video conference, the Union Minister said that our next objective is to use more and more renewable energy. Indian Railways has tied up for 4,260 MW (installed) solar and 3,427 MW (installed) wind power to meet its energy needs. He further said that with this approach, Indian Railways has already signed a contract for 1,500 MW renewable energy.

At the same time reiterating his commitment to renewable energy, he said that an important 170 MW power procurement agreement (PPA) has been signed with the Madhya Pradesh government. This contract reflects the purchase of India’s cheapest solar power, which costs Rs 2.15 per kWh. The Madhya Pradesh government is supplying solar power to Indian Railways from its largest solar park through Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Limited (RUMSL).

Vaishnav praised the state Chief Minister Mohan Yadav for active role in furthering railway development in the state. He reiterated the strong commitment of the Government of India for a durable and green future for the country’s transport network. The Union Minister said, ‘Indian Railways is committed to achieving emissions and promoting environmental stability, reducing oil imports and making changes in rail transport from road to reduce overall logistics costs.
