Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced Cashless Treatment Scheme. He said that if the police is informed within 24 hours of the accident, the government will bear the entire cost of treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh. This scheme will be applicable to all road accidents caused by motor vehicles on any category of road. Even in hit and run cases, compensation up to Rs 2 lakh will be given to the victim’s families.

National Health Authority (NHA) will be the implementing agency for the program in coordination with police, hospitals and state health agencies etc. The program will be implemented through an IT platform combining the functionality of the e-Detailed Accident Report (EDAR) application of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Transaction Management System of NHA.
‘Cashless’ treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh will be available
Addressing the media, Nitin Gadkari said that as per the broad outline of the pilot programme, the victim is entitled to ‘cashless’ treatment up to a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh per person within a maximum of seven days from the date of the accident. The government will come up with a revised plan by March this year.
Government’s big step for accident victims
Let us inform that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had started a pilot program on March 14, 2024 to provide ‘cashless’ treatment to road accident victims. The objective of the pilot program started in Chandigarh was to create an environment to provide timely medical care to victims of road accidents. The pilot project was later extended to six states.
Consideration of fixing working hours for drivers
Nitin Gadkari also said that the government is studying labor laws to formulate a policy to fix working hours for commercial drivers on the lines of pilots, as fatigue of drivers is leading to serious road accidents. He also said that there is a shortage of 22 lakh drivers in the country.
