Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has set a new benchmark at the global level. The company has become the world’s first Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers (IPP), which has made its entire 14 GW operational portfolio a water positive. The special thing is that AGEL has achieved this target a year before FY26.
This certification to Agel has been given by the Global Assurance firm Intertk. This certificate is received after the detail audit of 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation sites of the company. In India, any renewable energy company has received such a certification for the first time on such a big scale.
What is water positive?
Being water positive means adopting a practice that is not limited to save water, but also increase the availability of water in the surrounding areas. For the industry, it means that more fresh water they use, give back to nature. Water positive framework involves preserving water, improving its use and contributing to its compensation.
Example of sustainability in desert
Solar and wind plants of the company are in an area where water is considered a luxury, such as Khavda or Thar desert of Gujarat. Even in these difficult circumstances, AGEL has given priority to sustainability. This initiative of AGEL has come up as a new hope for water in these areas.
AGEL’s water saving is so much that it is equal to 467 Olympic size swimming pools. This water is more than the need of half a year of island like Lakshadweep. More than 1.23 lakh people are benefiting from 85 revitalized ponds, including many water scarcity community.
Picture changed from technology
More than 54% of AGEL’s operational capacity runs from robotic cleaning technology, saving 546 million liters of water annually. The company has also worked on the Rainwater harvesting, deepening of traditional water bodies, and air -making innovative projects. The company had initially targeted to make 200 MW operational plants water positive, which was achieved in FY23 itself. After this, making the entire portfolio water positive till FY26 was a new goal and now it has been achieved a year ago.
The AGEL spokesperson said, “We do not just make green energy, make it the best way.” He said that climate change is going to affect the availability of water and India is in those countries where water security is the biggest concern. Therefore, this success matters a lot.
Today AGEL has become a sustainable model for the country and the world with the AGEL’s operational portfolio water positive, single use plastic free and zero waste-to -landfill certification. It is not only the company, but a benchmark for the country’s green energy and climate action.
