Indian Cricket Team for England Tour: The Indian cricket team has to play a five -Test series against England between June 20 and August 04. Before this series, Team India has suffered a big shock and Rohit Sharma has announced the retirement of Test cricket. Rohit Sharma was leading the Indian Test team, in such a situation the board will also have to appoint a new captain. Before announcing Rohit’s retirement, media reports claimed that the selectors have told Rohit Sharma that he was removing him from the post of captaincy, after which Rohit’s decision came. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, it is believed that Shubman Gill can become Indian captain and he is leading in this race. However, nothing has come about it yet. At the same time, a new update has come about this.
According to the report of Cricbuzz, a meeting of selections is going to be held on May 23 to select Team India for the tour of England. It is not clear where the selection committee meeting will be held, but the BCCI is planning a press conference to present the new Test captain. The India A team going on England tour is expected to be selected in the next few days.
Gill at the forefront of captaincy race
After Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Shubman Gill has become at the forefront of the race to become an Indian Test captain. The tour of England may be his first series as a full -time captain. The five -match Test series will begin in Headingley from 20 June. Gill’s captaincy is now being considered almost certain as Jasprit Bumrah can stay out of some matches due to workload management during the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Bumrah was the vice -captain of the Indian Test team on Australia tour and also captained India in two Tests for Rohit’s non -play.
The Indian team can be selected for the England tour later this month. This series will start the next WTC cycle for India and in such a situation the selectors want to choose a captain with a long -term approach. For this reason, 25 -year -old Gill can be given priority.
Bumrah leads India’s fast bowling attack in all formats, but recently he has been troubled by back discomfort. Due to which he was out of the first few matches of the Champions Trophy and IPL 2025 and he can be done in future.
KL Rahul has captained India in three Tests among the players played in the last Test of India in Sydney, while Virat Kohli was the captain of India for a long time before Rohit. Gill has never captained the Test or ODI, but he has led the team in five T20s. All these matches were played on a tour of Zimbabwe in 2024, who were at rest after winning the T20 World Cup. Gill is also the vice -captain of India’s ODI team.
Gill is being prepared for the top role for the last few months. He has done well as the captain and batsman of Gujarat Titans (GT) in this season of IPL. Gill was handed over the captaincy of GT after Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2024. Although the team’s performance in IPL 2024 was not good, but GT is included in the top teams this season.
Gill has been a regular member in India’s Test team since Test debut in Melbourne in December 2020. He has played a total of 32 Tests so far, in which he has scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05. This includes five centuries and seven half -centuries.
