IPL 2025, Punjab Kings: India’s top-order batsman Shreyas Iyer was on Sunday declared the captain of Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) team Punjab Kings ahead of the new season starting in March. This right-handed batsman, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 under his captaincy, was bought by Punjab Kings for a huge price of Rs 26.75 crore, making him the second most expensive player during the IPL auction held in November last year. Iyer will reunite with head coach Ricky Ponting with whom he was at Delhi Capitals when the team reached the final of the 2020 IPL.
Iyer said in a statement, “I feel honored that the team has expressed confidence in me. I am looking forward to working with coach Ponting again. The team is looking strong, with a great mix of players. I hope that we will justify the faith shown by the team management by winning our first title.”
The 2024 season has been a memorable one for Iyer in which he won the IPL title with KKR and also led Mumbai to their second Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was also a part of the Mumbai team that won Ranji and Irani Trophy.
