Shillong: Meghalaya Police has registered a case against a person for hurting religious sentiments of people by forcibly entering a church in East Khasi Hills district and raising slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’. An official gave this information on Friday. The official said the man entered the church in Mawlynnong village on Thursday and posted the video on social media while shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has condemned this act and said that administrative legal processes are underway in this case in which a person attempted to disturb the peaceful co-existence of people.

The Chief Minister told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “This act appears to have been done deliberately.” As a state government, we will leave no stone unturned to stop anyone from creating social, religious and communal hatred. Legal action is ongoing.

East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Sylvester Nongtinger told PTI, “After receiving a complaint in this regard, we have registered a case against a person named Akash Sagar on Instagram at Pinursala police station.” Said that the investigation is going on and efforts are being made to arrest the culprit.

Social activist Angela Rangad lodged a police complaint on Thursday demanding legal action against the man.

He said, “Sagar encroached deliberately and in a pre-planned manner and sang non-Christian songs and raised slogans. This act appears to be deliberately intended to create communal disharmony, insult the minority culture while violating all constitutional rights of religious freedom. ‘Central Puja Committee’ (CPC), an influential Hindu organization in the state, has criticized this. The act has been condemned.

CPC President Nab Bhattacharya said, “We are saddened to see a video circulating on social media. This incident hurts the religious sentiments of everyone in this peace-loving state. We condemn the actions of the accused person and urge the police to take strict action against the accused as per law.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Meghalaya unit chief spokesperson M. Kharkrang said, “Appropriate measures should be taken against such senseless acts and necessary legal action should be taken to ensure that those committing such mischievous acts are given appropriate punishment.” May he be punished.

Meghalaya Police has asked hotels, homestays and tour operators to inform the police if they have any information about Akash Sagar.
