New Delhi:
The brutal murder of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a prominent Hindu community leader in Dinajpur district of Northern Bangladesh, has not only questioned the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, but has also created tension in India-Bangladesh’s diplomatic relations. 58-year-old Bhabesh Chandra Roy, who was the vice-president of the Birla unit of Bangladesh Puja Uddapan Parishad, was brutally beaten to death on Thursday evening from his house. The incident happened when he was at his residence in Basudebpur village in Dinajpur.
Bhabesh’s wife Shantana told that she received a call at 4:30 pm, which suspects that the call was made to confirm her presence. About 30 minutes later, four unidentified people riding on two motorcycles arrived and forcibly took them with them. His body was later recovered in a nearby Narabari village.
Confirming the scene, the police said that Roy was beaten up badly and there is a possibility of organized conspiracy behind his murder. According to Abdus Sabur, the officer in charge of Birral police station, the process of registering the case is going on.
India’s sharp reaction to the incident
India has reacted sharply to this incident and has put the interim government of Bangladesh in the dock. Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said, “The murder shows the tendency of planned harassment of Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. The criminals of the earlier incidents are still left from punishment.”
India reminded the Bangladesh government to fulfill the responsibility of protecting all its citizens without any discrimination. According to Jaiswal, “We condemn the incident and urge Dhaka’s interim government to ensure quick and fair investigation.”
Congress accused Modi government of failure
The opposition party in India targeted the central government demanding that the issue be taken to the international stage. Party President Mallikarjun Kharge described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent Bangladesh visit as a failure and said that
The continuous atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh and the murder of Bhabesh Roy are proof that the Prime Minister’s diplomatic initiative has been fruitless. In the last two months, there have been 76 attacks on the Hindu community, in which 23 people have been killed. These figures have been taken from the government’s answer in Parliament itself.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also issued a statement saying, “This is not an alone incident. The chain of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh is very worrying – impure temples, attacks on businesses and houses are increasing.”
He said that the Government of India should not only condemn but should conduct active diplomatic intervention so that pressure can be made on the Bangladesh government and justice is ensured.
