The Economic Offenses Branch (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has taken major action in the New India Co-operative Bank scam case. Former general manager Hitesh Mehta has been arrested on charges of fraud worth Rs 122 crore. Mehta is accused of rigging bank money.
An official said that Mehta was arrested by the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the city police after questioning for more than three hours. The acting Chief Executive Officer of the bank Devarshi Ghosh on Friday went to Dadar Police Station in Central Mumbai and filed a complaint of misuse of money.
The official said that Mehta was called to record his statement in the South Mumbai office of the investigating agency in connection with this case. Police officer said that he will be produced in local court on Sunday
In front of the officials of the Reserve Bank of India, accused Hitesh Mehta had confessed to the scam. According to sources, Rs 112 crore disappeared from the vault of Prabhadevi office, while Rs 10 crore has disappeared from the vault of Goregaon office.
According to the police, Hitesh Mehta gave Rs 122 crore to the people of his identity. Hitesh started withdrawing money from Kovid period. Now the EOVU is investigating who Hitesh Mehta gave the money to whom.
The Mumbai Police had registered a case of alleged embezzlement of Rs 122 crore against New India Co-operative Bank General Manager and Accounts Head and his colleagues. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed several sanctions on the cooperative bank on Thursday, including a ban on withdrawal of funds by depositors.
Bank General Manager and Accounts Head Hitesh Mehta, along with other colleagues, conspired and embraced Rs 122 crore with money kept in the chests of Prabhadevi and Goregaon offices of the bank.
Most of the 28 branches of this cooperative bank are in Mumbai metropolis. It has two branches in Surat, Gujarat and a branch in Pune.
