At least 19 people have been arrested in three states of the Northeast for commenting on the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. 26 people lost their lives in this attack, including a naval officer and an intelligence bureau officer. Those arrested in Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura include an MLA, a journalist, student, a lawyer and retired teacher. Most of the arrests are due to social media posts. So far 14 arrests have been made in Assam alone.
The first arrest took place on Thursday when Aminul Islam, an MLA from Opposition Party All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), was arrested and accused of treason. Aminul Islam had said that the Pulwama attack in 2019 and the Pahalgam attack on Tuesday was the “conspiracy of the government”. On Friday, he was sent to four days police custody.

Other arrests in Assam till Friday include Mohammad Zabir Hussain from Halakandi, Mohammad AK Bahauddin from Silchar and Mohammad Javed Mazumdar, Mohammad Mahahar Mia from Morigaon and Mohammad Sahil Ali from Sivasagar. Mohammad Musta Ahmed alias Sahel from Karimganj was arrested on Facebook on Friday night for posting ‘Pakistan Zindabad’.
Among the arrested people, Journalist Hussain, Bahuddin Silchar is a computer science student at Assam University and Majumdar is a lawyer. On Saturday, the police arrested 25 -year -old Mohammad Zarif Ali and District Secretary of the Student Organization Sessions Mukti Sangram Parishad Anil Bania from Bishwanath. Suman Mazumdar alias Bulbul Alom Majumdar was arrested from Halakandi, Mashud Azhar from Nagaon and another person from Hajo near Guwahati, all were arrested for making “anti -India comments” online.
Action will be taken against those who raise anti-national slogans
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “If necessary, we will apply the provisions of the National Security Act on them. We are checking all social media posts and whatever we find anti-national, action will be taken against them … There is no similarity between India and Pakistan. There is no similarity between India and Pakistan. Both countries are enemy nations and we should remain like this.
So far, four arrests have been made in Tripura, including two retired teachers. While in Meghalaya, a person named 30 -year -old Simon Shayla was arrested on Friday from East Khasi Hills district.
