
The day of April 2 is recorded in aviation history with a ‘Black Day’. Exactly 39 years ago, on 2 April 1986, the bomb placed under a seat of the US Passenger Jet Plane Boeing 727 was exploded. This plane, going from Rome to Cairo, got a big hole at an altitude of 11,000 feet and four people sitting at that place fell out of the plane with air pressure. A girl of 8 months was also included in them. The pilot carefully saved the life of the rest of the passengers by taking the plane into the Athens, but till date America could not punish anyone for this terrorist attack.
What happened that day?
When the bomb exploded, Boeing 727 was flying at an altitude of 11,000 feet (3,350 m) above Greece on the way to 727 athens. From the blast, the 2 m x 1 m wide hole under a window in front of the Starboard Wing. It has been found that the explosion occurred due to the explosion of the bomb placed under the 10F seat.
Due to the blast, 4 passengers fell outside the plane. Four bodies were recovered from a site in south-west 140 km from Athens. Three of these were from the same Greek-American family. Apart from this, the police also found the body of a male passenger, which was identified as Americans of Colombian origin.
The remaining 118 passengers and crew survived. Pilot Captain Richard Peterson made an emergency landing while telling the Athens Control Tower.
What was found in the investigation?
According to the BBC report, the police initially identified the Lebanon -born Palestinian woman, My Eliias Mansoor. She was then a suspected terrorist associated with the Abu Nidal extremist group, who was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to bomb a PAN American aircraft in 1983. My Eliias traveled on seat 10F in the earlier flight of Boeing 727.
However, Mansoor strictly refused to be a hand in it. After two years of investigation, the US State Department said that it admitted that Mansoor had blasted on the orders of the known Palestinian terrorist Colonel Hawari. However, the truth is that till date no one has been convicted to carry out the bombing.
TWA applied for bankruptcy in 2001 and American Airlines took it into possession.
