Many countries around the world are currently facing a serious problem of pollution. The increasing level of pollution has seriously affected people’s health and the environment. Pollution has reduced the life span of life, while the governments of many countries are trying to take concrete steps to solve this problem. Thousands of people took to the streets in Skopje against pollution.
Thousands of people protested against air pollution in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. Let us tell you that Macedonia is often one of the most polluted cities in Europe. This was the second such demonstration in Skopje in less than a month when people took to the streets against pollution.
Protesters taking part in the ‘Come Out for Clean Air’ march in the city of Skopje called on authorities to take immediate measures on the issue. The banner of the protesters read, ‘Our air is poisonous, our government is deaf, the future cannot be seen through fog.’ This march was organized by several environmental groups and citizens’ initiatives.
According to the Institute for Public Health, about 4,000 people die every year in North Macedonia due to exposure to PM2.5 particles. Due to pollution, people here have to suffer from respiratory problems. These are most dangerous for human health.
According to a UN report in 2019, air pollution is the cause of 20 percent of premature deaths in Balkan cities. People living in this area lose an average of 1.3 years of their life due to air pollution.
