Police have reached the President’s residence to arrest South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. President Yoon’s lawyer says South Korea’s impeached President Yoon agreed to appear at the office of investigators probing the rebellion on Wednesday, after authorities entered his residence to arrest him. This is the second time that the police is trying to arrest President Yoon. A crowd of Yun’s supporters has gathered outside the President’s residence. Investigators attempted to arrest Yoon at the presidential residence on January 3, but the attempt was foiled by the Presidential Security Service.

A Seoul court on Tuesday issued a second warrant against impeached President Yoon and granted an extension to arrest him. The Constitutional Court scheduled the first official hearing of Yun’s impeachment trial for January 14, and further hearings have been scheduled for January 16, 21, 23, and February 4.

The impeachment motion against Yun was passed in the National Assembly on December 14, 2024, and was submitted to the Constitutional Court for deliberations for 180 days. Yun, who was named by investigating agencies as a suspected ringleader of the rebellion, declared martial law on the night of December 3, but it was revoked by the National Assembly a few hours later.

President Yoon Suk Yeol did not attend the first hearing of his impeachment trial on Tuesday due to security reasons. According to Yoon’s lawyer Yoon Gap-gyun, this decision was taken keeping in mind his safety and the possibility of accidents. He said the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) and the National Office of Investigation (NOI) for high-ranking officials are continuing efforts to arrest the President. The lawyer said that security issues must be resolved before Yoon can appear at the trial, adding that Yoon will be present at any time once the security issue is resolved.
