Nutan was born on 4 June 1936 in Mumbai. His father was director and poet Kumarsen Samarth and mother was veteran cinema actress Shobhana Samarth. His younger sister is famous actress Tanuja, who is the mother of actress Kajol. Nutan debuted in Bollywood in 1950 with the film Hamari Beti. This film was produced by his mother Shobhana Samarth. She received the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Amiya Chakraborty’s film Seema. After this, with films like ‘Sujata’, ‘Karma’ and ‘Bandini’, Nutan joined the list of veteran actresses of that era. Nutan’s stardom was such that even after marriage, people were ready to cast her in films.

It is said about Nutan that her film ‘Nagina’ was released in 1951. In which there were scary scenes also. Therefore, it was prohibited for minors to watch the film. Nutan was only 15 years old then. She reached the premiere of the film with her family friend Shammi Kapoor. She was feeling that she was the heroine of the film and would get a warm welcome, but the watchman stopped Nutan at the gate of the theater and even after much argument, she was not allowed inside.

Veteran director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had said about Nutan in an interview that he had never seen an actress as natural and charismatic as Nutan. He cannot get anyone to act like Nutan even if he wants to. Nutan also played the role of a calm, simple and well-to-do woman clad in saree on screen and was also seen in bold clothes on the demand of the script. Before casting Nutan in the film, the makers ensured that the role of the female lead should be strong and equal to that of the hero.

Talking about personal life, she married Lieutenant Commander Rajneesh Bahl. When Nutan became a star. During that time there was a rift with his mother Shobhana. Actually, Shobhana Samarth used to manage daughter Nutan’s money. Shobhana was responsible for everything from fees to investments for her films. Later Nutan accused her mother of misusing her money. A court case went on between mother and daughter for many years and both of them did not talk for 20 years. Shobhana Samarth had accused her son-in-law Rajneesh Bahl for such behavior of Nutan. Nutan and Rajneesh Bahl’s son is actor Mohnish Bahl. His granddaughter Pranutan Bahl is also an actress.
