S-400 Sam is also a kind of air defense missile system. It is a long distance surface to air type system. That is, this system itself is deployed on the ground and from here, he fires the enemy’s rocket-mesile in the air.
The S-400 SAM was developed in the late 1980s by the Almaz Central Design Bureau, Russia. Actually, Western countries had an air defense system like MIM-104 Patriot at that time and Russia created it to counter the same. Its purpose was to replace the S-200 and S-300 systems built in the 1960–1970s. India has also bought it for itself. The two countries had a deal of Rs 35,000 crore for five S-400 and was signed in 2018. Three of these S-400 squadrons have already been deployed and the fourth will come at the end.
Why is S-400 Sam special?
Each S-400 squadron consists of 16 vehicles, including launcher, radar, control centers and assistant vehicles. It can track air threats up to 600 km away. The S-400 uses four types of missiles, capable of penetrating the target at a distance of up to 400 km. It can prevent fighter aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones, making it an important part of India’s defense. These systems are important for the protection of India’s properties which have strategic importance.
Why is this better than the Chinese HQ-9 with Pakistan?
Pakistan has bought HQ-9 from China for its air defense. Now its shortage is that China itself has made its HQ-9 based on Russia’s S-300 air defense system. When the S-300 itself is a level below air defense system from the S-400, HQ-9 weakens in front of the S-400 with India. The HQ-9 has a 200 km radar detection range that is adapted to prevent intermediate distance missiles. But compared to the S-400, its detection range is low and only it can stop limited aircraft like missiles.
