A BCCI source said, “The selectors spoke to Dravid as he saw Gill when he was a teenager and also trained him in the U19 and senior team. He had some best things to say about Gill’s ability as a leader.”

Confirming the name of Gill on Saturday, Ajit Agarkar said that Gill will live as leaders for a long time and his selection committee has full confidence in his ability to face the challenge. He said, “You do not choose a captain for one or two times. You want to try and invest in something that will help us move forward. We were hoping that this is the right decision. We have seen some progress with them during the last year.”
