It is being told that after the agreement, Hamas can release 33 Israeli hostages in the first phase. The Israeli government believes that Hamas and its allies still hold 94 hostages taken from Israel during the October 7, 2023 attack, of whom about 34 are dead. According to Bloomberg report, senior Israeli officials said that the agreement with Hamas will lead to the release of 33 hostages during the initial 42 days of the ceasefire. It is feared that some of the hostages may not even be alive.

What did Trump say on the ceasefire?

US President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday that he believes a ceasefire agreement can be concluded before he becomes president next Monday. In an interview with Newsmax, he said, ‘We are very close to completing it. I understand there has been a handshake and they are finishing it, probably by the end of the week. Hours before Trump’s comments, President Joe Biden said during an address at the US State Department that the two sides were ‘on the verge of a resolution’. Meanwhile, the Israeli Army said that five soldiers were killed and 8 others were seriously injured in an explosion in a building in the northern area of ​​the Gaza Strip. The building collapsed due to this blast, but its reason is not yet clear. The army said that the incident is being investigated.

What do Al-Qassam Brigades claim?

According to Xinhua News Agency, in a statement, the army said that all the soldiers killed were from the Reconnaissance Battalion of the Nahal Brigade. The 23-year-old team commander was also included among them. The eight injured soldiers also belong to the same battalion and have been admitted to the hospital. After this incident, the total number of Israeli soldiers killed in the war going on since October 2023 has increased to 840. At the time of the incident, indirect talks were going on in Doha, Qatar between Israel and Hamas, in which efforts are being made to reach a ceasefire agreement after more than 15 months of fighting.

Israeli army suffered huge losses

On Monday, Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, claimed to have killed more than 10 Israeli soldiers in the northern Gaza Strip in the past 72 hours. “The Israeli army is suffering huge losses, which it is hiding. All they have done is destruction in the northern part of Gaza and massacres of innocent people,” Brigades spokesman Abu Obaida said on the social media platform Telegram. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said “progress” has been made in ongoing talks in Qatar to release the hostages. He also said that Israel is making every possible effort for the release of the hostages.
