The Trump administration has decided to restore the SEVIS record (student visa registration) of thousands of foreign students studying in the US. According to the report by Politico, the decision will apply to students who had only made a minor and frequently ignored legal violations.
This important step has come in the federal court following several weeks of investigation and restrictive orders by judges. The Department of Justice informed the court and the lawyers of the students that it was withdrawing from its former policy. According to the report, this decision was taken when the judge was about to summon the ICE officers for a thorough review of the actions of the administration.
According to the statement of the Department of Justice, the SEVIS records of those students are being restored who filed a case against the administration’s action. The statement also stated that “Ice is now working on a new policy that will provide a clear outline for the SEVIS record termination.”
In the review of the cases, it was revealed that the Ice was ending the records of the students who had alleged criminal history, but they also included students who were never accused or against whom the charges were rejected later.
Earlier this year, the then Foreign Minister Marco Rubio had canceled the visas of dozens of foreign students on charges of involvement in pro -Palestine activities. Subsequently, in another major action, students were also targeted whose legal violations were minor and whose profiles were removed from the SEVIS database.
