Tim Paine Praise Steve Smith: Former Australian Test captain Tim Penn has shared his views on Steve Smith’s debut and his fast to become one of the greatest cricketers in the country. Penn also believes that Smith still has a lot of contribution to the game. Penn made his Australian debut with Smith against Pakistan at Lord’s in 2010. Smith was initially selected as a bowling all -rounder, batting at number 8 in his debut Test and scored 1 and 12 runs.
Penn said that everyone hoped that he would be just a leg -spinner who would have the ability to bat at number 8 or 9, but no one thought he would define a generation of cricket. He said, ‘In his second Test in Headingley, Smith scored around 70 runs. He was batting at number ninth and he played some shots, so that we came to know that this boy is different. It was strange but good. He used to play some extraordinary shots and hit the ball in some strange areas.
He told, ‘At that time only Greg Chappell thought that he could become a world class batsman. We all thought that he would be just a leg -spinner who would be a skilled batsman at number 8 or 9. It is absolutely extraordinary to see what he has done since then.
Penn told SEN 1170, ‘We are looking at one of the greatest batsmen ever. Smith has become the fourth Australian to score 10,000 career Test runs, he has joined the category of Ricky Ponting, Alan Border and Steve Waugh. Earlier this month, he was stuck for 9,999 runs after being dismissed in the second innings of the fifth Test against India in Sydney.
Penn said, ‘After scoring 10, 000 runs, their response will be important because it has always been something they wanted. The way they are playing and I know about them, they are still really at high levels. ‘
