Who is Anita Anand, who can become the Prime Minister of Canada, also has a special relationship with India

After the resignation of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speculation regarding his successor has intensified. According to reports, Indian origin leader Anita Anand is a major contender for the post of Prime Minister. Justin Trudeau has resigned from the post of leader of the Liberal Party and the post of Prime Minister, although he will remain in the post of Prime Minister until the Liberal Party chooses its new leader.

Anita Anand, who is currently Canada’s Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. He was born in Kentville, Nova Scotia. His parents (now deceased) were Indian physicians. His father was from Tamil Nadu and mother from Punjab. Anita has two sisters – Geeta Anand, who is a lawyer in Toronto, and Sonia Anand, who is a physician and researcher at McMaster University.

Anand moved to Ontario in 1985. She and her husband John raised their four children in Oakville. Anand has held many positions during her career. She was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Oakville in 2019. He served as Minister of Public Services and Procurement from 2019 to 2021 and also served as President of the Treasury Board and Minister of National Defence.

As Minister of Public Services and Procurement, Anand led contract negotiations to secure vaccines, personal protective equipment and rapid tests for Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic. When Anita became the National Defense Minister, she took steps against sexual misconduct in the army. He provided extensive military aid to Kiev during the Russo-Ukrainian War, as well as providing personnel for the training of Ukrainian troops.

In September 2024, Anita Anand was appointed Transport Minister in addition to the post of Chairman of the Treasury Board. Apart from politics, Anita Anand has been known as a scholar, lawyer and researcher. She has been a professor of law at the University of Toronto where she held the JR Kimber Chair in Investment Protection and Corporate Governance.

Anand has served as Associate Dean and a member of the Governing Board of Massey College. She has been Director of Policy and Research at the Capital Markets Institute, Rotman School of Management. He has also taught law at Yale Law School, Queen’s University and Western University.

Anita Anand holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political Studies from Queen’s University, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Jurisprudence from Oxford University, a Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto.
