New Delhi:
Demonstrations against military attacks on Israeli’s Gaza in Bangladesh have become violent. On Monday, protesters, who landed on the streets in various cities of the country, targeted several international brands, which they consider to be connected to Israel. These include popular names like KFC, Bata, Pizza Hut and Puma. In cities like Sylhet, Chittagong, Khulna, Barishal, Kumilla and Dhaka, protesters vandalized shops and looted fiercely. The police have arrested 49 people so far in connection with the violence.
Why are demonstrations happening?
These demonstrations started demanding solidarity against Israeli military actions in Gaza and demanding boycott of Israeli products. However, the violence erupted when the mob targeted the businesses, which they had misconceptions that they were associated with Israel. For example, Bata is a Czech Republic based company, which has no connection with Israel, but the protesters did not spare its showroom. Similarly, American franchises like KFC and Pizza Hut were also damaged. In viral video on social media, the protesters were seen breaking the glass walls of Bata’s showroom with bricks and entering the KFC store and destroying the goods.
What is the demand of protesters?
The protesters demanded that strict steps should be taken against the Bangladesh government and the United Nations Israel. Many people condemned the “brutal murder of innocent children, women and citizens” in Gaza and appealed to the global community to stand up for humanity. Although some political parties such as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) held peaceful demonstrations, the violent mob spoiled the atmosphere.
