The second round of high-level talks will be held on Saturday, April 19 for the deal on the nuclear program between the US and Iran. The first round dialogue was described by both sides as “creative” and a week later it is taking place for the second round. Iranian External Affairs Minister Abbas Aragchi and America’s middle east messenger Steve Witchoff will hold talks in Rome. Oman is playing the role of an intermediary in the conversation of both sides. According to Iran’s official media, the Iranian delegation has reached Rome for talks.
Significantly, during the tenure of President Barack Obama, the US signed a deal with Iran on a deal with a nuclear program, which is known as Joint Comprehensive Action Plan. According to that deal, Iran had to stop its uranium enrichment activities and in return it was relieved from American sanctions. But Trump had pulled out of such a deal with Iran during his first President’s tenure in 2018. There is no diplomatic relationship between Tehran and Washington soon after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. With the President’s chair re -handling in January, Trump resumed his “maximum pressure” strategy of sanctions against Iran.
“Doubt on America’s intentions ..”
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran showed “somewhat seriousness” on the US side during the first round but questioned his intentions. In a conference in Moscow, he said, “Although we have serious doubts about the intentions and motivations of the American side, in any case we will participate in the dialogue tomorrow (Saturday).”
Iranian officials have insisted that the conversation focuses only on its nuclear program and removal of the ban. Araghchi said in detail that if Washington avoids “improper and unrealistic demands”, then there is any agreement with the US.
In an interview published by the French newspaper Le Monde on Wednesday, the United Nations Nuclear Watchdog chief Rafael Gossi said that Iran is “not far” from making nuclear bombs.
