The Bombay High Court on Wednesday accepted a petition seeking to waive the cooling-off period by cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his choreographer wife Dhanashree Verma in the ongoing divorce proceedings. A bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar directed the family court to decide the divorce petition on Thursday keeping in mind the participation of Chahal in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL). Leg spinner was bought by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for Rs 18 crore in the IPL 2025 auction.
The bench noted the fact that the two sides had been living separately for two and a half years and they duly followed the terms of consent regarding payment of alimony during the arbitration process.
Under the Hindu law, if the husband and wife have been living separately for a year or more, they can apply to get a divorce order by mutual consent. However, under Section 13B (2) of the Hindu Marriage Act, a legal cooling-off period of at least 6 months is provided from the date of presentation of the divorce petition to detect the possibilities of agreement and reunion between the couple.
The Supreme Court said in a historic decision in 2017 that the 6-month cooling-off period is not compulsory, and if the court feels that there is no possibility of parties to live again, it can forgive the condition.
Dhanashree and Chahal got engaged in 2020 and got married in a private ceremony in Gurugram in December the same year.
Dhanashree, a 28 -year -old dancer, is known for her fusion dance performance, in which traditional Indian dance styles are mixed with contemporary styles. Recently, Chahal was seen among the audience sitting next to social media star RJ Mahwash during the Champions Trophy final. However, this was not the first time the two were connected together. In December last year, a picture of RJ Mahvash with cricketer went viral with Christmas celebrations.
After this, the social media star told his truth on Instagram. In a note he wrote: “Some articles and speculation are going on on the Internet. It is really fun to see how baseless these rumors are. If you are seen with a person of an opposite sex, do you mean that you are dating them? I am sorry, what year is it? And how many people are you dating?”
“I have been patient now for 2-3 days, but I will not let any PR team drag my name to hide the image of others. Let people live peacefully with your friends and family in difficult times.”
Chahal’s journey of IPL, which is spread over more than 160 matches, has not been less than remarkable in any way. With 205 wickets, he is the highest wicket -taking bowler in IPL history, who has left behind Dwayne Bravo’s record of 183 wickets during the 2023 season. His career average an economy rate of 22.44 and 7.8 reflects his ability to take wickets, which is a rare achievement in the T20 format.
Chahal’s most spectacular moment came in 2022 when he got a purple cap for Rajasthan Royals (RR), and took 27 wickets this season. During the 2024 edition, Chahal became the first bowler to cross the 200 wicket milestone in IPL history. His IPL Tally includes six four wickets, one five wickets and a hat -trick. Between 2014 and 2021, Chahal Royal Challengers were well-known spinners of Bangalore. In 113 matches for franchise, he took 139 wickets, which still holds the record for the highest wicket for any bowler. Despite his dominance, RCB took a surprising decision not to retain him before the 2022 mega auction. Chahal’s performance was excellent after RCB. Representing RR in the last three seasons, he took 66 wickets, which reflects his continuous impact.
