Ranya Rao Statement on Gold Smugggling: Actress Ranya Rao has claimed that she was beaten in custody and falsely implicated in the gold smuggling case. In a letter addressed to Additional Director General of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ranya Rao alleged that he was arrested directly from the plane, not from the airport terminal, as officially stated. He further claimed that he was slapped 10–15, he was not allowed to eat and sleep and forced to sign empty documents under pressure.

A day after his bail plea was rejected by a special court in Bengaluru, his allegations have been reported. This case has taken a political turn. The Karnataka government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged involvement of Ramchandra Rao, the stepfather of Ranya Rao, Karnataka Director General of Police, and has investigated the potential lapse by the law enforcement officers.

Ranya Rao was arrested by DRI at Kamphegowda International Airport on 3 March, when he was caught smuggling more than 14 kg of gold from Dubai. However, in his letter written from Parappana Agarhara Central Jail, he insisted that he was detained inside the aircraft before landing from the aircraft, denying official reports.

Being implicated

The letter presented as part of the jail memo includes claims of misconduct. Ranya Rao claimed that he was threatened to reveal his father’s identity and was forced to sign empty paper.
