An UN agency says that around 9,000 people were killed in an attempt to cross the border last year. In this way, the death toll has set a new serious record for the fifth consecutive year. The number of deaths has exceeded double during the attempt to cross the border since 2020. The name of the United Nations agency issuing this figure is the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The most deaths in Asia, what has the agency said?

According to the International Organization for Migration, 8,938 migrant deaths were recorded in 2024 last year. That is, during an attempt to cross the border. According to Alajjira report, IOM said in a statement on Friday, March 21 that the actual death figure is likely to be very high, as many deaths are not recorded.

According to the data released by the organization, Asia, the most deaths with 2,788, occurred in Asia. This was followed by the Mediterranean Sea with 2,452 and Africa with 2,242. The final data for the US has not come yet, but in 2024 at least 1,233 deaths (including 341 in Caribbean) occurred.

According to the report, Julia Black, coordinator of IOM’s missing migrants project, said, “Increased deaths are terrible in itself. But the fact that thousands of people are unknown every year, it is even more tragic.”

At the same time, IOM Deputy Director General for Operations Ugochi Daniel said, “Increase in deaths in many areas of the world shows that we need to work on an international level which can prevent more tragic losses of life.”
