No H1B Visa, Indian students studying in America will be in trouble due to closure of this program

Every year about 1 million students from all over the world come to America to study for higher education. Their objective is to study in America and start working there, for which they usually use H1B visa. Also, Optional Practical Training Program (OPT), also known as OPT, is very popular among the international students coming to America and Indians are the biggest names among those who benefit from it. But Trump’s supporters are strongly opposing two policies of America, which also includes OPT. Now the question is why are Donald Trump’s supporters opposing this policy and what effect will the closure of this program have on Indians going to study or work in America?

First of all, let us know what is optional practical training?
OPT is a program with the help of which international students can temporarily live and work in America. Optional Practical Training is a program that gives international students the opportunity to learn on the job for a limited period of time after their studies. The OPT program allows foreign students on F-1 visas to work in the US for up to three years if they have a STEM degree. If understood in very simple language, this program provides employment to the students for a short period of time.

Why is this policy being opposed in America?
In America, the US Tech Workers Group is writing openly against the Optional Practical Training Program and is demanding strict restrictions on it. US Tech Workers is a platform of Americans against the visa program run for employment. The US Tech Workers group protested against the program, writing on Donald Trump should stop such programs in America. The intention behind which is that more and more American people should get priority in jobs.

How will Indians suffer due to closure?
America’s newly elected President Donald Trump had given the slogan ‘Make America Great Again’ in his election campaign. The effect of Trump’s America First policy will be visible in a few days, because he has repeatedly said that the American people have the first right on American jobs. If Trump bans this program, it could affect millions of Indians. According to the US Embassy in India, 3.31 lakh Indian students came to America for studies in the year 2023-24. Out of these students, 29.42% i.e. 97 thousand 556 students are those who have chosen the Optional Practical Training Programme. This clearly shows how much impact OPT will have on Indians. So it remains to be seen whether the new American government makes the path to study and work easier for Indian students or more difficult.
