Sudan: Al-Fashar battle reached Jamjam camp, medical charity temporarily shut down services

The Non-Governmental Medical Assistance Organization called Doctors Bidout Borders (MSF) has announced temporary closure of all its services at the Jamjam displaced camp in North Darfur state of Western Sudan. The MSF said that due to the recently increased attack and fighting in the Jamjam camp located near Al-Fashar, the capital of North Darfur, it is no longer possible to give medical help there.

11 patients died in MSF hospital

The organization said, “Despite terrible hunger and human needs, we are forced to stop all the services including our field hospital.” Sudan chief of MSF, Yehia Kalilah, said that eleven patients died in MSF hospital, including five children. He could neither get the right treatment nor could he be sent to Saudi Hospital in Al-Fasher, which is the only surgery hospital in this area.

Al-Fashar fight reached Jamjam camp

According to the Xinhua News Agency report, he said that now the fight of Al-Fashar has reached the Jamjam camp directly, which has worsened the situation. The MSF has no option left to stop services due to the problems faced by being so close to violence, difficulties in sending essential goods, lack of experienced employees and uncertainty about safe exit.

Conflict between SAF and RSF from April 2023

According to the MSF, a large number of new displaced people have recently arrived at the Jamjam camp, which have been shouted to about 5 lakh people, who have run away from the areas around Al-Fashar. There is a fierce fight between Sudani Army (SAF) and Para Military Rapid Support Force (RSF) since 10 May 2024 in Al-Fashar. The conflict between SAF and RSF continues in Sudan since April 2023, which has killed at least 29,683 people by the end of 2024.
