When was ISIS established?
The full form of ISIS is Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. In Arabic it is also known as Daesh (Daulatul Islamia fil Iraq Sham). It was established in April 2013. Initially its leader was Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Earlier it was linked to Al Qaeda. But after differences, ISIS separated from Al Qaeda.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declaring caliphate from the large Al Nouri Mosque in Mosul, Iraq
ISIS had declared its ‘caliphate’ in June 2014. It started calling its leaders ‘Caliphs’. Al Baghdadi had declared himself the first Caliph. He made this announcement from the large Al Nouri Mosque in Mosul, Iraq. The brutality of ISIS was seen most in 2014 and 2015. During this time he captured many cities of Iraq and Syria.
Death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed on 27 October 2019 in an operation by US security forces in north-west Syria. The ISIS caliphate had collapsed due to the actions of US-led security forces. It is believed that after the death of Baghdadi, the command of this terrorist organization is with Abu al-Hussein al-Qureshi. But it is not public.
ISIS had just claimed responsibility on Wednesday for the attack on a military base in Somalia the day before. Taking responsibility for the attack on its Telegram channel, the group wrote that the attack was carried out by 12 attackers. In this attack, 22 Somali army soldiers were killed and dozens were injured.
America broke the back of ISIS
America-led security forces had caused a lot of damage to this organization. Even after this, this organization has carried out attacks in West Asia, Africa as well as in Western countries. But in recent years its attacks have reduced significantly. Last year, it had taken responsibility for two attacks in Iran in which about 100 people were killed. It also claimed responsibility for the attack on a concert in Russia in March 2024, in which 143 people were killed. It also claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a mosque in Oman, in which nine people were killed. ISIS had claimed responsibility for about 838 attacks around the world in 2023. Earlier, he had taken responsibility for 1,811 attacks in 2022.
Since its establishment, ISIS has captured the Syrian city of Raqqa and Iraq’s Mosul. It ran its empire from there. Its fighters are autonomous. Its leadership works secretly. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate its size. The United Nations estimates that there are about 10 thousand fighters in its stronghold. But after the defeat in Raqqa and Mosul, its fighters have changed their strategy. Now they work secretly.
What is ISIS Khorasan
After America’s action in Iraq, most of its fighters fled to Afghanistan, Syria and Pakistan. Most of them joined ISIS Khorasan. ISIS Khorasan came into existence in northern Afghanistan. Khorasan refers to an ancient Caliphate. It included parts of today’s Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan. Khorasan is also called Khorasan-e-Kahan in Persian. Ancient Khorasan of Central Asia included today’s Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and eastern Iran. A large part of Iran was included. The present Khorasan province of Iran is a small part of historical Khorasan.
