Leaders from all over the world gathered in the Vatican. Everyone came together to give a final farewell to Pope Francis, the biggest religious leader of Catholic Christians. It was here that US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Woldimir Jailnsky. Both sides have described it as historic. The question is whether this will help in sealing the peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. A strong answer to this will be clear in the coming days.
Pope was brought together at the time of Francis’s funeral, the American and Ukrainian President Sitting close to each other on red and golden chairs in the huge cave of St. Peters Basilica. This was his first meeting in front of the whole world in the White House in front of the whole world.
Trump said that the meeting was good and ignoring the previous controversy, he said, “We had a little dispute because I disagreed with his words and cameras were running.”
His National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said the meeting was “iconic”.
Waltz told Fox News Sunday Morning Futures, “That meeting is going to be recorded in history books .. President Trump is becoming the President of peace, talking about peace and diplomacy at all places in the Vatican.” Galansky, while giving a similar reaction to the meeting, said, “This was a very symbolic meeting that has the ability to become historic, if we together get a result.”
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Kir Stmper also attended the meeting. This was special because European powers often look at Trump with suspicion.
“Peace agreement still far away”
Trump is still looking restless about both sides. Their effort is to sign a peace agreement at any cost, about which he once argged that he can seal within 24 hours of sitting on the President’s chair. According to Trump, he believes that Jailonski is ready to leave Crimea, which Russia seized in 2014. While the Ukrainian leader has repeatedly said that he will not do this at any cost.
Even though the meeting of Jailonsky with Trump has given some timefall, the White House has reiterated its stand that if there is no rapid progress, it will soon be away from its role as a broker (mediater) in the talks of this peace agreement. Trump indicated that he would “two weeks” to the process.
There have been several rounds of meetings between Russian and American officials but Moscow has not yet shown commitment to the ceasefire. In such a situation, Trump’s comments about Putin shows his disappointment.
US special envoy Steve Witchoff has held several face-to-face meetings with Putin in Russia in recent weeks. Witchoff is seen warmly shaking hands with Putin and walking in a shopping district with Kremlin’s Economic Advisor. Vitkoff has been accused of speaking the language of Russia while talking to Ukraine.
Another person present in the circle close to Trump has called a personal call for peace after a visit to Rome- first Lady Melania Trump, who celebrated his 55th birthday on the funeral day of the funeral. He said, “I got the honor of attending the funeral of Pope Francis on this day, where I prayed for the treatment of the victims and peace in the world.”
