New Delhi:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once again rejected America’s newly elected President Donald Trump’s comment in which he had said that Canada could become America’s 51st state. Trudeau called Trump’s comments a distraction tactic. “That’s not going to happen. Canadians are very proud to be Canadian. One of the ways we most easily define ourselves is that we are not American,” Trudeau said in an interview with CNN. “I think Trump is a skilled negotiator, just distracting people from that conversation to some extent.”
Trump warns Canada of imposing heavy tariffs
Donald Trump recently called for a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian imports unless Ottawa strengthens border security. However, on this statement, Trudeau warned that this step will affect both the economies. Trudeau said that if such tariffs are implemented, the American people will have to bear the brunt of increased prices. “Oil and gas and electricity and steel and aluminum and lumber and concrete and whatever American customers buy from Canada will suddenly become very, very expensive if they move forward with these tariffs,” Trudeau said.
Justin Trudeau also gave a sharp reaction to Trump’s remarks
Trudeau also noted Canada’s previous use of counter-tariffs during a 2018 trade dispute with American goods such as Heinz ketchup, playing cards, bourbon and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. “But we don’t want to do that because it raises prices for Canadians and it hurts our closest trading partner,” Trudeau said. America’s newly elected President Donald Trump had talked about using “economic force” to unite Canada and America. Trump often refers to Canada as the “51st state.”
