Mumbai:
The echo of laughter in a building in Khar, a suburb of Mumbai, has now stopped indefinitely. Recently, the condition of this building has been defeated by its owners. The Habitat Club, running at the Unicontinental Hotel, is now closed. The management of the club has posted this message on its Instagram account. “Habitat was not involved in the construction of the recently made video of Kunal Kamra and does not support the views expressed in it. We apologize to all the people hurt by the video and honestly apologize.”
The Comedy Club was closed indefinitely after posting this message in Marathi and English. It was attacked by Shiv Sena activists on Sunday evening, as the stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra had taunted the Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde by making a parody of a film song.
This is not the first time that any performance in this comedy club has taken the form of a big controversy. In February, a show called “India’s Got Latant” surrounded in controversies was also shot at this site. Criminal cases were registered to comment on “parents’ sex, such as Ranveer Allahbadia and time Raina, who reportedly indicated incest (Incel). During the investigation of the case, a team of Mumbai Police also inspected the club premises.
Habitat Club was established in 2016
The Habitat Club was founded in 2016 by Punjabi businessman Balraj Singh Ghai, settled in Mumbai. Ghai graduated in 2009 from the Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition (IHMCTAN). He inherited the 53-room hotel from his father, which he turned into a platform for live performance, food and drink. He believed that there was a shortage of places in Mumbai where live art could be promoted, which inspired the establishment of Habitat. Before closing, Habitat had hosted hundreds of live stand-up comedy shows, poetry sessions, live music performance and other art events.
This restaurant-cum-club was not only limited to providing seating to the platform and audience to the artists, but also provided facilities for recording, post-production, human resource aid and promotion on social media platforms. Habitat has 3.6 lakh followers on Instagram account, while it has 3,500 followers on X (East Twitter).
After the attack, Habitat announced that the club would remain closed until the management would find a method that could run the stage safely. Mumbai’s comedy lovers are unhappy with this decision.
