Nayantara documentary dispute: Madras High Court rejected Netflix petition

New Delhi:
The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition of OTT platform Netflix seeking cancellation of a copyright violations case filed by South Superstar Dhanush against actress Nayantara. It is noteworthy that the matter is related to the inclusion of scenes of Tamil film ‘Nanum Rowdy Paddy’ in Netflix’s document ‘Nayantara: Beyond the Faili’.

Justice Abdul Kudus also dismissed another application filed by Los Gatos Production Services India, a company managing Netflix’s content investment in the country, in which Dhanush’s Wonderbar Films was given by the court for filing a case in Madras High Court. The pre -permission was demanded to be canceled.

Los Gatos argued that the applicant is located in the company Mumbai, so the case should not run in Chennai. However, the judge, senior advocate P.S. The verdict was given in favor of Raman, which said that the application of Los Gatos is not worth the hearing. The court fixed February 5 for hearing a petition related to the interim relief of Wonderbar Films. This petition is related to the use of the scene of ‘Nanum Rowdy Paddy’ in Netflix document.

In the affidavit, Wonderbar Films director Shreyas Srinivasan argued that Nayantara or Netflix did not have the right to use any footage of the film in 2015 without the prior permission of Wonderbar Films. Srinivasan said that Nayantara had signed an agreement with Wonderbar Films on 27 August 2014, under which all the rights related to his performance, equality, name and voice in relation to the film were with the production company forever.

Wonderbar Films claimed that the BTS was included in the documentary in the documentary in the trailer of the document, which was issued a notice to Netflix on 9 November 2024. In response to the notice, Netflix and Torque Studios said on 11 November 2024 that the scenes were individual and were not shot by the persons appointed by Wonderbar Films.

The dispute came out a few days before the release of document-drama on 18 November 2024. On 16 November 2024, Nayantara shared a post on his social media platform and accused Dhanush that he repeatedly requested Wonderbar Films for No Objection Certificate (NOC) for two years, but he did not get NOC.
