New Delhi:
Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan met Bhajan Singh Rana, the auto-rickshaw driver who took him to the hospital after the attack last week, and expressed his gratitude to him for his timely help. Rana said in an interview with ‘PTI-Bhasha’ that Khan not only thanked him for his timely help but also offered him financial assistance. However, the exact amount is still not clear. According to reports, Rana, originally from Uttarakhand, may have received around Rs 50,000, although the driver has not confirmed this amount citing a promise made to Khan. When Rana was asked about this amount, he said, “I have made a promise to him (Saif) and I will stick to it.” Let people speculate about it.
Rana said, “Let people say that he (Saif) gave me Rs 50,000 or Rs 1,00,000, but I would not like to disclose the amount. He has requested me not to share this information and I will keep my promise to him, whatever happens, it is a matter between him and me.
However, the driver told that a social worker Faizan Ansari had given him Rs 11,000 separately. Rana said that when he reached Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday, just before Saif was discharged from the hospital, he met the actor and his family members and touched the feet of his mother Sharmila Tagore. He said that everyone gave him a lot of respect and also got photographs taken with him. He also said that the actor has promised to stay in touch with him.
On the night of January 16, the 54-year-old actor was attacked by a man with a knife in his house located on the 12th floor of an apartment in Bandra area here. The attacker stabbed him several times with a knife. After this Khan was taken to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Khan was discharged from Lilavati Hospital located here on Tuesday evening.
The autorickshaw driver said, “I met him (Saif) in the hospital yesterday (Tuesday). He called me to thank me for helping him get to the hospital. He appreciated me. I got blessings from him and his family. He (Khan) introduced me to his mother (Sharmila Tagore) and I touched her feet. He gave me whatever money he felt was right and said that he would be available whenever I needed help.
Rana said that after the news of Khan being taken to the hospital in an auto-rickshaw, he has received many calls from the media, friends and relatives. “It was a normal working day for me,” said Rana, who earns Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per month. I often drive auto at night. I have been in this profession for 15 years, but it has never happened that any celebrity travels in my auto. Since then (after Khan was taken to the hospital), my life has changed. Today, almost everyone knows me by my name and face.
Police had arrested Bangladeshi national Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad Mohammad Rohilla Amin Faqir from Thane on Sunday on charges of attacking the actor. Shahzad had entered India illegally and had changed his name to Vijaydas. According to the police, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused had entered the actor’s house with the intention of stealing. Meanwhile, police officials on Wednesday said that several departments under the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina, Mumbai will examine important evidence seized by the police probing the attack case on actor Saif Ali Khan.
A police official said that FSL departments like Tape Authentication and Speaker Identification (TASI), Biology, DNA, ‘Footprints’, Physics, Cyber and other departments will analyze the evidence. He told that when the accused was arrested from Thane, the police did not find blood stains on the clothes recovered from his bag. The officer said that investigators are facing difficulty in interrogating Fakir due to language barrier.
He told that the accused has been asked to speak slowly so that the police can understand his statements. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam commented on the Bollywood actor’s “soon recovery”. Nirupam said, “Doctors at Lilavati Hospital said that the knife had penetrated 2.5 inches deep into Saif Ali Khan’s back and his surgery lasted for six hours. They should tell us whether a person undergoing a six-hour long operation can recover so quickly.
Shiv Sena (Ubhatha) leader Sanjay Raut also talked about the actor’s speedy recovery. Raut said, “The knife was deeply stabbed, but Saif came out of the hospital on his own. This is no less than a miracle by the doctors.
