What is water dispute in America and Mexico, why the matter is stuck

Ever since Trump became the President of America again, he has been continuously seen working on the policy of America First, adopting rebellious notes on several fronts simultaneously. Since his becoming President, America’s relations with their neighboring countries are seen falling in trouble. Once Trump is seen putting a tariff while talking about making Canada a US state, he has made a big change about Mexico and has now declared Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America.

Amidst stressful tension with Mexico, the US has now rejected Mexico’s water request, alleging that its southern neighbor has reduced water sharing. The state department said that this is the first time the United States has rejected Mexico’s request for special supply of water, which was to be given to Tijuana, a border city of Tijuana.

The bureau of the State Department, which handled Latin America, said in a post on X, “The continuous decrease in water supply by Mexico under the 1944 water -sharing treaty is destroying American agriculture – especially the farmers of the Rio Grande Valley.” The 1944 treaty, climate crisis and growing population and agriculture in the areas of drought have come under pressure in recent years due to the Rio Grande and Colorado River. The treaty has set a five -year limit for water supply, with the latest limit to end in October 2025.

Under the treaty, Mexico sends water from the rivers of the Rio Grande Basin to the US, which in turn sends Mexico water from the Colorado River in the west. But due to the drought situation in the northern part of the country, Mexico has lagged behind in its water payment. American farmers and MPs complain that Mexico has waited till the end of each bicycle in the past and has fallen short in the latest period.

This treaty is very controversial in the south of the border, where Mexican farmers have been struggling with drought in recent years. A year ago, the last sugar mill in southern Texas was closed, due to which there was a decrease in water supply from Mexico. After 18 months of conversation, the United States and Mexico entered into an agreement to improve supply a few days after Trump’s election. It was then appreciated by the Biden administration, in the agreement, Mexico was asked to work with the United States to supply water on time, including the first water supply in each five-year border.

Prior to the announcement of the State Department, President Claudia Shinbam of Mexico said on Thursday that the water issue is being dealt with through the border and water commission of both countries. Next, she was seen saying that the water has reduced. This is a part of the problem.

Tijuana is a huge city on the border of the California state of America, which has become the center of manufacturing, the city depends on the Colorado River for about 90% of its water and the city is now on the verge of ruin from the extreme infrastructure.

What are you trying

The Colorado River, which is also a major water source for the Los Angeles and Las Vegas, is watching its water level decreasing due to the southwest United States dried and heavy agricultural consumption, which is going to raise about half water beef and dairy cattle. In southern Texas, farmers have expressed concern for the future of cotton, citrus fruits and other agricultural products without regular water supply from across the Mexico border.

US Agriculture Secretary Brook Rolins on Wednesday announced a relief amount of $ 280 million for farmers of Rio Grande Valley. Texas Senator Ted Cruise praised the state department’s water decision and wrote on the X, “The non-non-compliance of Mexico is in crisis that the farmers of Texas are in crisis. I will pressurize the Trump administration to comply with Mexico and provide water to the farmers of Texas.”

This water dispute has come to light at a time when Trump is taking a tough stance in the case of Latin American countries. On returning to the office, Trump vowed to end the arrival of migrants without documents, which mainly come from Central America and Venezuela, but pass through Mexico. Trump deployed troops along the border and announced tariffs on Mexico, although he has stopped it till 2 April after the announcement.
