World Top 5: Firing in Iran’s Supreme Court, two judges killed, attacker commits suicide

Two senior judges were killed in shooting at Iran’s Supreme Court in central Tehran. According to a statement from the Judiciary’s Media Centre, the murder was carried out by an armed man who committed suicide after opening fire on Saturday morning.

  1. Two judges of Iran’s Supreme Court were shot dead in broad daylight. Xinhua News Agency reported that the Iranian Judiciary’s Mizan News Agency said that the two judges were Ali Razini, head of Branch 39 of the Supreme Court, and Mohammad Moghiseh, head of Branch 53. The attacker committed suicide immediately after the attack.
  2. Donald Trump will take oath as the President of America on January 20. However, thousands of people gathered in Washington DC to protest against Trump. Protesters raised concerns about women’s rights and LGBTQ issues and the safety of marginalized groups. The DC People’s March, organized by several activist groups, will culminate in a rally outside the Lincoln Memorial.
  3. A South Korean court has extended the detention period of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The court expressed concern that he might destroy evidence related to his martial law declaration. After this announcement by the court, his supporters got angry and attacked the court building.
  4. Before the start of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Palestine supporters took out a rally in central London on Saturday, in which thousands of people gathered. During this period the police have arrested more than 70 people. Most of the people were detained on suspicion of violating the authorized perimeter for protests near major government buildings.
  5. Three people died in a Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s capital Kiev. While Ukrainian leaders called it a heinous attack, Russia called it retaliation. Ukrainian officials said three other people were also killed in Russian attacks elsewhere in the country.
