Mumbai indians women vs delhi capitals run out controversy: Delhi Capitals started their campaign with a victory by defeating Mumbai Indians in the second match of the Women’s Premier League in a thrilling manner on the last ball. Mumbai had scored 164 runs while batting first and in response, Delhi scored 165 runs losing 8 wickets. Delhi wanted 2 runs off the last ball and it seemed that the match could go in the super over, but nothing happened and Delhi won on the last ball. However, the most discussed in this match, it is the decision of the third umpire, due to which the entire result of the match changed.
Three disputed decisions inside 15 balls
Delhi, chasing the target from Mumbai, Delhi needed 30 runs to win in the last three overs and lost six wickets. The sixth shock to Delhi was on 17.3 overs as Sara Bryce. After this, Shikha Pandey came to the crease. As soon as Shikha Pandey arrived, she wanted to play the lap shot and missed. The ball went towards the backward point and decided to steal a run fast. But Nikki Prasad, standing at non -strike end, sent him back.
On the other hand, the fielder threw the ball directly on the striker and and the ball started going from the stumps. But Shikha had reached the line by then. After this, Shikha stole a single, because after the ball was on the stumps, the mid -wicket was defeated. After this, the run -out appeal was sent to the third umpire.
The replay revealed that when the LED stumps shone for the first time, Pandey’s bat was on the line. However, third umpire Gayatri Venugopalan gave his verdict based on his next frame of Replay and called the batsman not-out. In this frame, the bails were clearly raised and Pandey’s bat was inside the crease for a time.
Mumbai captain Harmanpreet Kaur was not happy with this decision and spoke to the field umpires N Janani and Aneesh Sahasrabuddhe. Due to Bai, Delhi Capitals now needed 24 runs in 14 balls.
After this, the second incident took place on the fifth ball of the next over. Shikha had returned to the pavilion. Radha had a strike. Radha sliced on the backward point and wanted to take a single single. At one time both the batsmen were trapped in the middle of the crease and had to send Radha back. The throw striker came to the end and wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia blew up the stumps. But by then Radha Yadav had returned.
The replay was finding out that Radha was out, but the third umpire did not consider him out. Radha had diverted to save herself, it seemed that her bat was in the air, when both Bells were in the air. Then, the umpire ignored it and took his decision on the basis that when Bells flew into the air, Radha’s bat was inside the line. He was given a knotout and hit a six on the next ball.

After this, the final decision came on the last ball of the match. Delhi needed two runs off the last ball. Arundhati Reddy played a shot towards the cover. Where the catch was missed from Harmanpreet running backwards. When the batsmen were going back to run the second run, Harmanpreet threw a flat throw to Bhatia. Bhatia blown stumps directly without losing any time and at the same time Reddy dives.
Once again, when the LED stump was burnt for the first time, Reddy’s bat appeared on the bat, but the third umpire saw the latter frame and decided that “the batsman has crossed the line before the wicket was completely uprooted”.
Third umpire made a wrong decision
With these three disputed decisions, the third umpire did not consider the decision to be burnt as the Bells was not considered as the Bells. According to the Sports Rules of WPL 2025, “Where LED wicket is used, the moment the wicket will be considered when the LED lights are burnt and the next frames will see that the bails will completely withdraw from the stump.”
Former India captain Mithali Raj said in his role as a commentator that two of those decisions – including Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav – should have been in favor of Mumbai. Not only Mithali but many fans also questioned the decision of the third umpire.
