Washington:
Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamurthy read a verse from ‘Bhagavad Gita’ at a bipartisan interfaith prayer meeting on the first day of the 119th Congress (US Parliament). The bipartisan interfaith prayer meeting was held on January 3 to seek blessings from God before the new Congress is officially constituted for a two-year term.
Krishnamurthy (51) took oath as a member of the US House of Representatives for the fifth consecutive time on January 3. He represents the ‘8th Congressional District’ of Illinois. Krishnamurthy was the only speaker representing Hinduism at the prayer meeting, while other speakers included Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson and Democratic Party leader Hakeem Jeffries.
“Years ago, Hindu Americans were not included in prayer meetings in our nation’s capital,” Krishnamurthy said.
He said, “I am grateful that we now have the opportunity to join in (prayer) and that I can play a role in spreading the beautiful blessings of Hinduism to both my Republican and Democratic colleagues. Together we have prayed for peace.” And pray for prosperity, and in doing so, we are better prepared to meet the toughest challenges our country faces.” After this Krishnamurti read a verse from ‘Bhagavad Gita’.
Krishnamurthy is one of the four Hindu lawmakers in America. The other three are Ro Khanna, Shri Thanedar and Suhas Subramanian.
