Sol, 24 March (IANS)The Constitutional Court of South Korea on Monday rejected the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-Supelies and restored them as acting President. Eight judges of the court rejected Han’s impeachment by 5–1 votes. Two judges voted to completely dismiss the impeachment motion.
According to the report of the Yonhap news agency, the decision came three months after the National Assembly passed the impeachment on the Prime Minister and the then acting President. Han, among other reasons on Han, on 3 December, was an impeachment about his alleged role in the martial law announcement of Yu.
However, as the only judge to retain impeachment, Justice Chung K-Sun said that the violations were so ‘serious’ that they should be dismissed.
A few minutes after the verdict, the Prime Minister reached his office. He said, “I thank the Constitutional Court for his intelligent decision. I will first start dealing with the necessary issues.”
Monday’s decision was closely observed as a test test of the court’s possible verdict in the impeachment case against Youn. The court has not yet announced the date of its decision on Yu’s case, although many observers estimate that it may come at the end of the week.
Let me tell you that President Yu announced emergency martial law in South Korea on the night of 03 December, but it was canceled after the Parliament voted against it. Martial law remained in force for a few hours but it shook the politics of the country.
The National Assembly passed an impeachment motion against the first President Union Suk-Yol and then the acting President Han Duck-Su. After this, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Song-Mok started taking responsibility for both the acting President and the caretaker Prime Minister.
